I've found that It's always kind of hard to write about yourself, so I guess I'll start out be telling you all why I volunteered to coach this year then follow that up with my coaching plans for this year.
I have two sons, 5 and 11 years old. We've had them in sports on and off over the last few years, and they have started to really enjoy them overall. In the past season's of a variety of sports, I've found myself thinking how I would coach those teams differently. I've even gotten to the point to where I started suggesting to the coach hints and tips on how they should do stuff. Of course, my wife and I talk after the games and practices, and talk about how we don't understand why the coach did this or that or we wonder why the coach didn't let our kid play this position or that position, blah, blah blah. If you have kids in youth sports, you probably know what I'm talking about, right?
Well, the thought finally occurred to me ( from a suggestion from my wife and brother-in-law), that I better put my money where my mouth is, so to speak, and sign up to coach. I figured I didn't have any right to complain or give the coaches "advice" because I wasn't the one out there, week in and week out, committing the time, effort and patience to coach. So, I committed to coach this season.
But that's only part of the why, the other part of the why is the kids. I love to see the kids learn, grow, win and most importantly have fun. The look on a kids face when they accomplish something they thought would be too difficult, like make a basket, or hit a triple, is priceless.
So that's why I'm coaching this year, now to explain a bit of what I have planned for this season.
I think the most important factor at this level of football is having fun, and secondly learning the fundamentals of football. If a child isn't having fun, they won't want to play, So my goal for the season is to create fun, fast paced, practices where every child has the opportunity to learn the fundamentals. I hope to be able to let ever kid try every position to help them find what fits them best. I strongly believe that if the kids are having fun, and using the fundamentals they are learning, winning games will be a natural by-product of the two.
I'm excited and looking forward to a successful season of Texas Youth Football!
Thanks for taking the time to read all this,
Coach Brown.
